Sentiment Analysis of Software Bug Related Commit Messages

ABSTRACT


Software development activities, being highly depen-

dent on human eorts, are aected by individuals

emotions. We study the emotional variations in bug-

introducing and bug-xing commit messages. Our

quantitative study includes more than 24,000 commit

messages over three open-source projects. The results

advance our understanding of the extent to which

emotions aect tasks resulting in software bugs, and

how such bug-introducing commits dier from bug-

xing ones in terms of the emotions expressed in the

commit messages.
